L’ART DU SPORT – Inflamed by the « JO bashing », the general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival is delighted by the return of the event to Paris after 100 years of absence.
The general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival and director of the Lumière Institute is more than just an enlightened sports enthusiast. Thierry Frémaux has long practiced and taught judo. LE FIGARO.- Were you eagerly awaiting the Olympics in Paris?
Thierry FRÉMAUX.- Of course. I couldn’t stand the JO bashing anymore. Even though the issues (technical, security, financial, ecological) of these massive events raise questions. In 1978, it was not right to choose for the World Cup to be held in Argentina, where the dictatorship was torturing its opponents a few meters from the stadium. But to have the Games in Paris, 100 years after 1924, is fantastic. In truth, I am in favor of the Olympics returning every four years to their original city: Olympia, in Greece.
